NOTES FROM OUTSIDE

Good things to know before you go.

Small field notes for more thoughtful days outdoors. Less gear obsession, more paying attention.

Pine trees and a winding path

01 / THE EVERYDAY ESSENTIALS

Pack with purpose.

A walk starts well when you have what you need and know why you brought it. Start with drinking water, a snack, a map, sun protection, and weather-appropriate layers. Add personal medication and a basic first-aid kit.

Look at the forecast and the route before choosing your bag. A short, familiar park walk and a remote full-day hike call for different preparation. For longer or unfamiliar routes, consult the park’s official safety guidance.

Use our day planner as a starting point, then adapt the list to the place and the people joining you.

02 / LESS RUSH, MORE NOTICE

Find your pace.

Start at a pace that lets you talk comfortably. Leave room in the day for breaks, a wrong turn, or an especially good view. Agree on a turnaround time before setting off, particularly when daylight is limited.

Pause occasionally without reaching for your phone. Notice the direction of the light, the textures of the trees, and the sounds beyond your footsteps. There is no prize for finishing first.

03 / A GOOD GUEST OUTSIDE

Leave it better.

Stay on designated trails, follow posted rules, and give wildlife space. Bring your rubbish home, including food scraps. Leave rocks, plants, and other natural objects where you find them.

Keep noise low, share narrow trails considerately, and respect closures. Caring for a place is part of enjoying it.
